Rhabdomyolysis is the rapid breakdown (lysis) of skeletal muscle tissue (rhabdomyo) due to injury to muscle tissue. The muscle damage may be caused by physical (e.g. crush injury), chemical, or biological factors. The destruction of the muscle leads to the release of the breakdown products of damaged muscle cells into the bloodstream; some of these, such as myoglobin, are harmful to the kidney and may lead to acute kidney failure. Treatment is with intravenous fluids, and dialysis or hemofiltration if necessary.[1]
Here's the link to the Crossfit Journal .PDF explaining why this is something to be cognizant of when you participate in the program./SOME/ people should read this, it's serious shit. Pushing yourself is important. Breaking those mental blocks and boundaries and going past them is great, and the rewards are worth it.
But you also have to keep that one safety on in the back of your mind. The one that listens to the groans and strains of agony in your body. Alot of them are a given, but there can be serious consequences if you aren't paying attention to the ones that are important.
